June 4th 2025. The day that the spark for Marvel vs Capcom 4 died.
A dramatic take for an amazing looking game from Arc System Works, developer behind DragonBall FighterZ and most recently Guilty Gear Strive.
Beyond pouring over dashed hope of a new MvC game (I mean, why ramp up the hype with the collection?) there are heaps of questions people seem to have in the few hours that this has been posted. Is this really the end of MvC? Has Marvel ditched Capcom after the failure that was Marvel vs Capcom: Infinite? Even though Disney should be shouldering an enormous part of the blame for dropping the ball. Effectively trying an arm behind Capcom’s back during the tail end of their low years.
Will the game stay a Playstation console exclusive? We have been spoiled with fighting games for the last few years with Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Tekken and Fatal Fury Call of the Wolves all launching on every console with cross play enabled. You’d be hard pressed to be waiting long to ever jump into. Ranked match with any of those titles. I worry for the longevity of the game. It helps the game is also coming to PC. But it seems developers are quick to take exclusivity money it seems. I don’t exactly know if console exclusivity hurt Street Fighter V when it launched. With the severe lack on content, it couldn’t have helped.
Does this free up Capcom to do another crossover game? Perhaps Capcom vs SNK 3? Perhaps a whole new fighting game property. We live in a new golden age of fighting games where seemingly anything is possible.
Negative speculation aside, this game looks phenomenal. Stunning art style. Some would say better than Marvel Rivals, which already impressed visually when it launched last year in 2024.
We know ASW can make a damn good fighter. We have 4v4, which seems unfathomable. But, 3v3 seemed too bold at the time when MvC2 launched. ASW have already proven they can replicate the MvC formula and put their own unique twist on it spectacularly. Especially when they did it better than Capcom, knocking out MvC:I out of EVO in favour for DBFZ. They know how to do it right.
The most exciting part of this collaboration is that Arc has earned peoples trust. No one that I have seen, myself included are questioning if this is going to be a great game. Im worried how many buttons am I going to have to learn in a 4v4 game. But that comes with its own excitement. The FGC likes to talk about the “Big Three” a lot. Always in reference to Capcom, Bandai Namco, and NRS. It’s been proven, but can be further driven home that we should change that to the “Fantastic Four”. Many believe Arc System Works has earned their spot on the Rushmore of FG developers.
Just my immediate reaction upon viewing the trailer after todays announcement. Ultimately, this is an announcement to be thrilled for. It’s great for the community as more eyes than ever are going to be on fighting games, with how well Marvel has been choosing their partners for publishing in the last few years. More people are going to play their first fighting game because of this. And we know ASW supports their games for many years. Here is to a healthy FGC.
